Needham police warning residents after several bear sightings

NEEDHAM, mass — After receiving multiple reports of a bear in town, Needham police are asking residents to be on alert.

If spotted, residents should leave the bear alone and not follow it, Needham police say.

All food resources such as trash cans, dumpsters and bird feeders should also be secured.

Needham’s reported bear is just one of many that have cropped up in the bay state in recent weeks. In Kingston, a homeowner came face-to-face with a bear that was lounging in his yard and eyeballing his strawberry plants. In Athol, only a pane of glass separated a hungry black bear from the inside of a home as it feasted on seeds in a hanging bird feeder.

To report sightings or to ask questions, residents call MassWildlife at 978-772-2145.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
