Eight people displaced after overnight fire rips through Malden home

MALDEN, Mass. — Crews battled a blaze that ripped through a Malden home early Friday morning, causing the rear roof of the house to collapse.

Firefighters responded to the area of Newhall Street just after 1:30 a.m. and found the back of a house fully engulfed in smoke and flames, according to the Malden Fire Department.

All eight occupants were out of the house on arrival and there were no injuries.

Assistant Fire Chief Lenny Dunn says the fire started in the rear wall of the home and traveled up into the attic. Due to the tight spacing of the surrounding houses, he says this was an exceptionally difficult fire to put out.

It is unclear if the home had working smoke detectors.

The Red Cross is assisting the eight people who are displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No further information was made available.
