MBTA Updates: Commuter Rail train delays continue on Newburyport/Rockport lines

BEVERLY, Mass. — Customers on the MBTA Commuter Rail north of Boston were seeing some serious delays Wednesday afternoon after a train derailed in Beverly and are facing the same on Thursday.

Newburyport and Rockport commuter rail train lines experience severe delays Thursday morning after derailment Wednesday night in Beverly.

“Safety inspections showed some damage to the switch as a result of yesterday’s upright derailment. Crews are working now to replace the switch and we hope to bring back service as soon as possible. said Alana Westwater with Keolis Boston in a statement. Passengers on the Rockport line can expect significant delays and cancellations. Service is running as usual on the Gloucester branch. Customer Assistance representatives are available to support passengers at North Beverly, Montserrat, Beverly, and Orient Heights stations.”

7:40 a.m. Rockport Line Train 104 is cancelled Thursday due to an ongoing switch issue. The next train from Rockport will be Train 106 at 8:13 a.m.

7:18 a.m. All Rockport Line trains are experiencing severe delays due to single-track operations caused by a switch issue. This comes after a derailment Wednesday night near the Beverly station.

6:37 a.m. The Newburyport Line trains will terminate at North Beverly. Shuttles buses will run between North Beverly and Beverly, MBTA tweeted out.

6:03 a.m. According to MBTA, all Rockport Line trains will terminate at Montserrat until further notice due to a switch issue. Officials tweeted early Thursday morning that passengers will be accommodated by a bus between Monserrat and Beverly.

It was Rockport Train 116 heading inbound that derailed. The MBTA says it was a “slow speed upright derailment.” The cause of the derailment was not disclosed.

Late Wednesday night, the T said buses will continue to replace trains between Orient Heights & Montserrat/North Beverly through the end of service.

Train service between Beverly & Newburyport/Rockport will resume Thursday morning, June 9. The T thanked riders for their patience.

The derailment comes one week after two MBTA Green Line trolleys collided in Boston at the Government Center station.

Four MBTA operators were injured in that crash, which is still under investigation. Just after 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1 a two-car westbound train with about 20-25 passengers struck a two-car train that was about to start service at Government Center station, according to the MBTA.

Two months ago, a man was killed when his arm got trapped in the doors of a Red Line train and dragged at the Broadway station.

In July of last 2021, 27 people were hurt on a Green Line train after it crashed into another train in front of it.

Safety officials from the Federal Transit Administration have been reviewing the safety of the MBTA, due to its consistent safety issues.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
