BOSTON — Today, the Massachusetts Department of Health (DPH) announced the second human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Massachusetts this year.
A man in his 60s was exposed to WNV in Middlesex County and is now the second infected individual in the state.
This follows DPH’s announcement from last week confirming the first human infection of the season.
The risk of WNV is now elevated in seven communities as a result of these cases, the locations of exposure and cumulative findings of WNV in mosquito samples.

Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Everett, Newton, Somerville and Watertown are now all considered high risk areas for the virus.
“The mosquitoes will be with us until the first hard frost,” said State Epidemiologist Dr. Catherine M. Brown in last week’s announcement. “People should use mosquito repellent with an EPA-registered active ingredient, clothing to reduce exposed skin, and consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during the evening or early morning when mosquitoes are most active.”
