PLYMOUTH, Mass. — The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy resumes Tuesday with additional members of her medical team expected to take the witness stand in Plymouth Superior Court.
The healthcare providers are among those who treated the Duxbury mother in the weeks and months before prosecutors say she killed her three children in January 2023.
On Monday, Clancy’s psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Tufts, spent a second day on the witness stand, facing an intensive cross-examination from defense attorneys. The questioning focused on the medications Tufts prescribed, her professional experience, and her familiarity with Clancy’s medical history.
Tufts testified that she wrote nearly half of Clancy’s approximately 30 prescriptions. Between September 2022 and the day before the children’s deaths, Clancy participated in 14 telehealth appointments with the psychiatrist.
According to testimony, Clancy’s anxiety and depression worsened during that period. Tufts said Clancy reported suicidal thoughts while doctors adjusted various medications in an effort to treat her symptoms.
Just weeks before the killings, Clancy voluntarily admitted herself to McLean Hospital for inpatient psychiatric treatment.
The defense has argued that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis and hearing voices when the children were killed, forming the basis of an insanity defense.
During testimony, however, Tufts said she had never treated a postpartum psychosis case before meeting Clancy. She also told jurors she did not observe signs of postpartum psychosis during her interactions with the defendant.
Defense attorneys pressed Tufts about her medical notes documenting Clancy’s symptoms, including severe anxiety, racing thoughts, sleep difficulties, and concerns about her children.
The defense is attempting to show that Clancy did not receive the mental health care she needed before the deaths.
