Legalized mobile sports betting begins in Massachusetts

BOSTON — At Draft Kings Boston Headquarters, it’s finally game time.

At 10 a.m. Friday, mobile sports betting was finally made available in Massachusetts.

Draft Kings is one of six companies now live with mobile sports betting apps in the Bay State.

And clearly, the company like its odds for success.

“Bringing legal regulated sports betting into Massachusetts, no one is going to understand the customer like we do. And I think that’s what will set us apart in terms of how we perform here,” said Matt Kalish of Draft Kings.

The state of Massachusetts is a newcomer to the legalized sports betting world.

Mobile sports betting is arriving in the Bay State 40 days after sports betting was first introduced at casinos.

The emphasis now, is on convenience.

Once you download an app, you open an account with your email, phone number and debit card.

Then, you are ready to bet.

And you can bet on (almost) anything: baseball, basketball, golf.

You can see the lines.

And you can do it all on your phone, without having to go to a casino.

“Hey, the Bruins are on. You know what? The Bruins are playing good. Let’s play the Bruins puck line, done. You don’t have to go to Boston to do it.  You can be wherever you live around here,” said one man at TD Garden.

Some apps are enticing new gamblers with betting credits, just in time for March Madness.

Right now there are six mobile gaming apps live in Massachusetts.

Three more companies will be getting in on the action in the next year.
