Large fire breaks out at popular New Hampshire resort

NORTH CONWAY, N.H. — A large fire tore through a popular hotel in New Hampshire Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Red Jacket Mountain View Resort at 2:47 p.m. and found heavy fire and smoke pouring from the third floor of the building’s south wing, the New Hampshire Fire Marshal’s office said. Guests were leaving the resort as fire crews arrived.

At one point, guests were seen jumping from balconies on the upper level to the lower level, before safely escaping to the ground, the Fire Marshal said.

Strong wind gusts posed a challenge to firefighters as they fought to bring the fire under control.

Two firefighters and one civilian were treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to Memorial Hospital as a precaution.

The Fire Marshal said there are no reports of missing guests. Those who were staying at the Red Jacket have been offered accommodations at another nearby resort.

The North Conway Fire Department requested assistance from more than a dozen nearby fire departments.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, all guest rooms were equipped with proper smoke alarms with a back-up battery. The rooms also had a fire alarm system heat detector, which would set off the building’s fire alarm system once activated.

However, the south wing of the hotel lacked a complete automatic sprinkler system. No further details were available at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Office of the State Fire Marshal at (603) 223-4289.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
