L Street Brownies to continue century-spanning polar plunge tradition

BOSTON — The L Street Brownies will continue their century-old tradition of running into the Boston Harbor on New Year’s Day on Sunday.

The L Street Bathhouse, now the BCYF Curley Community Recreation Center, is still undergoing renovations, so plungers will dive into the icy waters next door at M Street Beach.

Before the plunge, the group will gather at the L Street Tavern around 8 a.m., where special commemorative shirts were sold.

According to their Instagram page, all proceeds for the $25 shirt will go back into the Southie community.

The L Street Brownies have hosted a New Year’s Day polar plunge since 1904, making them one of the oldest cold-weather swimming clubs in America.
