‘I am not about to resign’: Brockton mayor speaks out after clerk magistrate hearing in Wrentham

WRENTHAM, Mass. — A decision is now pending in the case involving Brockton Mayor Moises Rodrigues.

On Friday, both prosecutors and the mayor’s defense team laid out their evidence, and now a clerk magistrate will decide whether there’s probable cause to move forward with criminal charges.

The hearing offered a detailed look at what both sides believe happened.

The commonwealth presented evidence they say supports probable cause to charge Mayor Moises Rodrigues with assault and battery--including nearly 17 pages of witness interviews, pictures, and videos from the parade.

Mayor Rodrigues’ defense team pushed back and argued that the evidence provided by prosecutors lacks important context and that what’s shown doesn’t tell the complete story of what happened.

“I don’t even know who this person is,” Mayor Rodrigues said in court.

The case stems from an alleged incident involving Brockton Mayor Moises Rodrigues and a teenage girl during the city’s Huntington Day Parade back in May. It’s an incident that later spilled into public view when the teenager’s mother interrupted Brockton High School’s graduation ceremony shouting.

“I trust in the process. The clerk magistrate is taking this under advisement, and we support whatever that they come up with,” said Rodrigues. “I don’t know exactly what I would say to the family other than the fact that if they felt that I did something that was inappropriate, I apologized that day and I continue to apologize now.”

“I am not about to resign; I am not about to step aside. I’m going to continue to do what the people of Brockton elected me to do to run their city, and that’s what I am going to do,” said Rodrigues.

Mayor Rodrigues’ defense says they wanted the hearing open to the public, so the community could see the process play out.

All of the evidence submitted will be reviewed by the clerk magistrate, who will ultimately make a decision, which could take a few days.
