BOSTON — The Department of Education released data Friday that breaks down student loan relief applications by congressional district.
Of the 475,000 applications submitted from Massachusetts, 380,200 were approved.
80 percent of all applications from the Bay State were approved but only 56 percent of those eligible submitted applications.
According to a department official, at least 30 percent of eligible borrowers in every congressional district were approved before the program was blocked in November.
When broken down by average income- the vast majority of applications came from the bottom 80 percent of congressional districts.
The plan would offer up to 20,000 dollars of individual debt forgiveness to millions of low and middle-income borrowers.
However, ongoing legal challenges have prevented people from actually receiving relief, even if their applications have already been approved.
The Supreme Court will hear cases challenging the plan’s legality later this month.
The Department of Education received about 26 million applications for debt relief before the program was blocked. More than 16 million of those applications were fully approved.
