Former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn hospitalized with broken bone in his neck

BOSTON — Former Boston Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican Raymond Flynn is hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Flynn’s son, Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn, says his 82-year-old father fell recently, breaking a bone in his neck.

“He’s feeling better,” said Ed Flynn on Wednesday. “He’s undergoing testing.”

Ray Flynn served as mayor of Boston for almost three terms. He was first elected in 1983.

Flynn resigned during his third term on July 12, 1993 when he was appointed Ambassador to the Vatican by President Clinton.

“We want to say thank you to the residents of Boston for their prayers and their cards,” said Councilor Flynn. “He is resting and undergoing testing right now at Mass General and we expect that he’ll be better after a few weeks. He’ll have to through some physical therapy.”
