Firefighter injured, 6 people displaced following 4-alarm fire in Somerville

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — Six people were displaced and one firefighter was injured Saturday when a home under construction caught fire in Somerville, the city’s fire chief confirmed to Boston 25 News.

That fire, which began around 12:30 p.m., reached four alarms and occurred on Morrison Avenue in Somerville.

The blaze spread to five neighboring homes, displacing the half-dozen people. The Red Cross is assisting those displaced.

“Any property that’s under renovation like this, that’s a wood frame, when the walls and ceilings are removed and the windows are removed, it causes the fire to rapidly spread through the building,” Somerville Fire Chief Charles Breen said.

Malden’s Fire Department responded to the scene as well to assist.

Officials are not currently aware what caused the fire, but they said it is not believed to be suspicious.
