Ferry services on Cape Cod being canceled ahead of Hurricane Henri

HYANNIS, Mass. — Several ferry services are being canceled and preparing for major disruptions ahead of Sunday, when Hurricane Henri is projected to hit parts of New England.

Hy-Line Cruises announced on Saturday that all ferry services to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket would be canceled, with service scheduled to resume on Monday.

SeaStreak also announced that service from New Bedford for the islands would be canceled.

The Steamship Authority announced over Twitter that passengers can expect service to be impacted for most, if not all of the day.

“We were supposed to leave Sunday but the family panicked a little bit and so we decided to leave today,” said Robin Taylor, a New Jersey resident who caught one of the last few ferries running into Hyannis on Saturday evening. “They don’t want to get stuck there. We rented a house for 7 days so there was no place to rent a room, so we had no choice to leave early.”

Other passengers had the same idea and flocked to the ferries to get back to the mainland.

“Tons of people are heading off the island, it was actually a nightmare downtown,” Izzy Von Lazar told Boston-25 News. “We wouldn’t be able to get back if we left tomorrow or something.”

Passenger Jay Jamison coming to Hyannis from Nantucket said he noticed people on the island preparing to hunker down through the storm.

“I think people are trying to get boats out of the water and they seem to batten down hatches in terms of getting their houses prepared.”

The last Hy-Line Cruise ferry docked in Hyannis Saturday night at 10:20pm, coming from Nantucket.
