WEYMOUTH, Mass. — All of the victims who were rushed to South Shore Hospital following a chaotic crash at an Apple Store in Hingham are expected to survive, doctors announced Tuesday.
Dr. Jason Tracy, Chief of Emergency Medicine at South Shore Hospital, said 10 people injured Monday in the Derby Street crash have since been treated and discharged. Eight victims remain hospitalized with various traumatic injuries, two of whom are being cared for in the ICU.
The trauma suffered by those in the path of 53-year-old Bradley Rein’s SUV include significant head injuries, orthopedic injuries to arms and legs, “lots and lots” of fractures, chest wounds and pulmonary injuries,” according to Tracy.
“It’s a long road to recovery for many of the patients,” Tracy said during a news conference.
Two other victims were taken to Boston for a higher level of care, Tracy noted. There was no immediate word on their condition.
“The patients that we have now, most are doing OK...At this point we would expect them all to survive,” Tracy explained.
The names of those who were injured in the crash haven’t been made public.
Kevin Bradley, a 65-year-old construction worker from New Jersey, was pronounced dead inside the store after suffering injuries that led to serious blood loss.
Rein was arraigned Tuesday in Hingham District Court on charges of reckless homicide by a motor vehicle and reckless operation of a motor vehicle, according to Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz.
Rein told investigators after the crash that he was driving around the shopping plaza in search of an eyeglass store when his foot got stuck on the accelerator, causing his SUV to jump the curb at a high rate of speed and smash through a glass facade, striking a number of workers and customers before coming to a rest in the back corner of the business, court documents indicated.
Witnesses likened the impact of the crash to an explosion, describing the aftermath as bloody and gruesome.
An investigation remains ongoing.
