Cambridge Police: Two people taken into custody following ‘shots fired’ in Somerville

CAMBRIDGE, Mass — Police officers in three cities reacted to gunshots being fired in Somerville on Tuesday that led to a shelter in place being ordered at two schools, and two men being taken into custody.

Police are looking for two other men as part of their investigation.

The incident started in Somerville at about 1:17 p.m. when the Somerville Police Department responded to 911 calls for multiple shots fired in the area of Mystic Avenue and within the Mystic Housing Development.

“At least two groups of males were involved in a shooting incident within the Mystic Housing Development. A witness provided a description of a vehicle that fled the scene; a description was broadcasted to surrounding police jurisdictions,” according to a statement from Somerville Police.

One firearm was recovered. One person who is believed to have been involved in this incident was located near the Healy School and taken into custody.

Somerville Police say there were no injuries as a result of the shooting.

The investigation resulted in students at the Healey School in Somerville being told to shelter in place.

A shelter in place at the Missituk School in Medford was also ordered “out of an abundance of caution” by police in Medford.

The two people taken into custody were stopped near the Middlesex County Juvenile Court in Cambridge - by a Medford Police officer.

One of the men is 31 years old. The other person is a teenager, according to police.

Both are charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle according to Cambridge Police. The vehicle was stolen in Boston.

Two other men escaped, according to Cambridge police.

Somerville Police say it’s not clear if the individuals are known to each other.

“Although we believe there is no ongoing threat to the immediate area, we ask residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the Somerville Police Department,” according to a statement from Somerville Police.
