Braintree residents donating medical supplies to help Ukraine

They brought bags and boxes. “There’s a lot of medical supplies in here,” said one donor.

Braintree residents answering the call to donate medical supplies for people in war-torn Ukraine.

“Some syringes and some amazing medical supplies,” said Mayor Charles Kokoros as he helped to box donations.

The effort was started by Kate Naughton, who is Braintree’s Services Coordinator. She saw a need and reached out to the Pastor of Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church in Jamaica Plain.

“He said they desperately need medical supplies,” said Naughton.

Naughton posted that on Braintree’s Facebook page and Friday car after car pulled up and dropped off donations.

“What’s going on over there is a crying shame and the people over there need our support,” said Frank Kelly of Braintree.

Mayor Kokoros was blown away by the amount of medical supplies dropped off.

“To see firsthand how great of the people Braintree are right here at Town Hall dropping off things is just amazing,” said Mayor Kokoros.

Naughton says what people see on TV is tough to watch.

“I think a lot of people feel helpless sitting at home watching on television,” said Naughton.

“I can’t imagine what the Ukrainians are going through over there. I can’t really do anything else but if I can do anything to help and I’d like to take the opportunity to do that,” said Sheri O’Brien who dropped off a bag of medical supplies.

Donating allows people to help and lets Ukrainians know the world outside cares.

“They were happy to be able to do something and I haven’t been able to find an outlet to do anything so grateful to be able to come here,” said Naughton.

The donations will be driven to the Ukrainian church in Jamaica Plain, then drive to Newark Airport, flown to Poland and finally arrive in Ukraine. An effort started in Braintree that will help people half a world away in Ukraine.
