3 Boston firefighters injured, 30 residents displaced after multi-alarm blaze spreads to 3 houses

BOSTON — Three firefighters were injured and 30 Boston residents were displaced following a multi-alarm fire on Irma Street that quickly spread to two adjacent buildings on Monday afternoon, fire officials said.

The firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries, with one firefighter suffering burns, and two firefighters experiencing some type of orthopedic injuries, fire officials said. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Sometime before 3 p.m., flames ignited in the basement of a triple-decker at 20 Irma St. and spread quickly to two nearby multi-family homes. The damage to the three charred properties is extensive.

About 100 firefighters responded to the scene. High wires on the street made it difficult for firefighters to access the burning buildings.

The fire quickly spread to two adjacent multi-family houses, located at 16 Irma St. and 24 Irma St., officials said.

A 3rd alarm was ordered as of 2:47 p.m. and a 4th alarm was ordered after that.

Minutes later, by 3:05 p.m., firefighters had knocked down the heavy fire, officials said.

Firefighters were seen carrying a cage containing two small birds outside of one of the buildings.

Fire crews battled the fire from both inside the buildings and outside, and surrounded the three buildings to spray water hoses to extinguish the flames.

Just after 3 p.m., fire officials reported the heavy fire had been knocked down.

Crews continue to chase hot spots at all of the impacted buildings.

The Red Cross responded to assist the displaced residents.

Additional information was not immediately available.
