Biden to sign $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill into law, Mass. to receive more than $9 billion

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is set to sign the historic $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill into law Monday. Massachusetts could receive more than $9 billion and put it towards improvements for the state’s roads, rails, waterways, and more.

Over the next five years, $12.5 billion will be spent on repairing and replacing bridges across the state, including the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges leading to Cape Cod. At least $2.5 billion would help make public transit systems more modern and accessible. That could include upgrading buses and trains to zero-emission vehicles.

More than $4 billion would support road improvements, and more than $1 billion would help ensure safe and clean drinking water across the state.

Massachusetts is also set to receive a portion of a $3.5 billion pot to help weatherize homes and buildings in the face of threats from climate change, which could help reduce energy costs for families. About $100 million would provide statewide broadband coverage, $63 million would expand electric vehicle charging networks, $15.7 million would help prevent cyberattacks, and $5.8 million would aim to protect state forests against wildfires.

Massachusetts’ total haul could be padded even further by grant funding. The state and individual communities can also apply for competitive grants.

President Biden will sign the bill on the Whitehouse lawn. The event will include governors and mayors from both parties, labor leaders, business owners, and more.

Massachusetts Senate President Karen Spilka is among those who will be in D.C. for Monday’s signing. Many are hopeful this massive infrastructure spending plan will help prevent another supply chain disruption crisis like the one we’re experiencing now.
