A.J. Quetta gets sendoff from teammates as he leaves Boston for rehab at Atlanta hospital

BOSTON — A Bishop Feehan hockey player seriously injured in a game last month got a major sendoff Tuesday morning as he left Boston for a rehab hospital in Atlanta.

A.J. Quetta, a senior at Bishop Feehan in Attleboro, injured his spinal cord during a varsity hockey game on Jan. 26 after he crashed headfirst into the boards, and had been receiving treatment at Mass. General Hospital for the past two weeks.

Tuesday morning, the next part of his journey began as he left MGH for ride to Hanscom Air Base before a flight to Atlanta, where he will continue his recovery at the Shepherd Center, a private hospital that specializes in spinal cord injuries and rehabilitation.

The Bishop Feehan hockey team wore green jerseys they wear for away games and saluted their teammate with raised hockey sticks as he was loaded into an ambulance outside MGH, some seeing him in person for the first time since he was injured.

Quetta, of North Providence, Rhode Island, will spend at least the next three months at the Atlanta hospital. Quetta’s family says he’s determined to beat the odds and recover.

His teammates said they’ll be there to welcome him home again when he returns, wearing the white jerseys they wear during home games.

The community has been rallying to support Quetta and his family. Boston Bruins alumni are hosting a hockey game on Feb. 20 and the Greg Hill Foundation is selling T-shirts to raise money to support A.J. and his family as he works on his recovery.
