7-year-old severely injured in Bridgewater dog attack

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — A 7-year-old girl was severely injured in a dog attack at a Bridgewater home Thursday night.

The little girl was outside in the backyard at 152 Main St. when the family pit bull attacked her, leaving her with multiple severe wounds to her head and upper body, police said.

Family members were able to pry the dog off her before police arrived around 8:30 p.m.

Officers found the girl in the back seat of a vehicle and cared for her before paramedics took over, rushing her to a Brockton hospital with serious injuries. She was later transferred to a Boston hospital for further treatment.

An adult family member was also bitten by the dog and taken to the hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening, police said.

Bridgewater Animal Control took possession of the dog and placed it in a required 10-day quarantine.

Police also filed a mandatory report with the state Department of Children and Families.

Police continued to investigate the incident Friday.
