1 person dead, several others rushed to hospital after shooting in Dorchester

DORCHESTER, Mass. — Boston Police responded to the intersection of Irma and Arbutus Streets in Dorchester early Monday morning for reports of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers found one adult female victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly after, they found an additional two other victims suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Police were notified that three other victims were self-transported to a local hospital, all suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

Locals tell Boston 25 News there was a yearly Jamaican Independence Day celebration going on when the shooting broke out.

“We all ran for cover we were stuck in the back. We didn’t come out. it was going on for a long time,” said Shena Diaz. “A party is a party. Party has nothing to do with the shooting. I don’t know a party where you say let’s go get dressed up and go shoot.”

City Councilors Michelle Wu and Andrea Campbell, who both represent the area and are running for mayor, visited the scene and talked to residents. Councilor Campbell told us her office has been getting videos from her constituents showing massive social media advertised parties.

“These are massive-scale events that should not be in someone’s backyard and not in a residential neighborhood because they usually do lead to incidents of violence,” said Campbell.

Wu, who is an at-large councilor, says her office has not gotten specific complaints but says the city needs to create safe areas for people to celebrate.

“It was very sudden and that is a community where people were coming together and looking to have some fun and celebrate coming together and it was completely unexpected,” Wu said.

Police also brought out K9s to help them in their investigation. Boston Police are actively reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. If anyone knows of further details regarding this shooting, they are requested to call Boston Police Homicide Detectives at (617) 343-4470.

Editor’s Note: The Boston Police Department previously reported that the shooting incident occurred in Mattapan, but updated the report to say that it happened in Dorchester.
