Local soldier killed in violent car crash in Florida

BONIFAY, FL — A New Hampshire soldier was killed in a violent car crash by a wrong way driver on Interstate 10 in Bonifay, FL on September 17.

Robert Gagnon Jr., 25, was struck by Christopher Russ, 40, who was driving eastbound in the inside westbound lane.

The Florida Highway Patrol hasn't released any information on why Russ was driving the wrong way down the interstate and an alcohol test is still pending.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, but were pronounced dead at the scene.

Gagnon, a member of the special forces airborne unit, grew up in Sandown, N.H. The army will be flying Gagnon home on Monday, September 25 into Logan Airport where a ceremony will take place on the tarmac.

Kathy Gagnon, Robert's aunt, has confirmed the funeral services for the soldier will be held at the Raymond Baptist Church in Raymond, N.H. on Wednesday.
