Lexington elementary school briefly evacuated over roof concerns

LEXINGTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Lexington elementary school will reopen Wednesday after fears about safety of the building's roof forced an evacuation of students and staff.

"The principal came over the intercom and told us to go outside," said Bridge Elementary Student Penn Riney.

School officials said the principal heard a "cracking" noise and evacuated 580 students and staff.

Administrators said the fire department and a town building inspector investigated the roof and found no imminent threat; a followup inspection by a structural and mechanical engineer determined the sound was created by melting ice.

"Our job is to make sure the environment is safe for the children and staff," said Superintendent Dr. Paul Ash.

Parents said they had seen similar problems to homes and businesses in the area and were relieved the school was safe.

"I just can't imagine having more days off, I mean they've already had so many snow days," said mother Pearl Riney.

"I think it's been really hard to get the ball rolling with the school year."
