Jury hears testimony in trial of man accused in fatal Quincy brawl

QUINCY, Mass. — On the first day of testimony in the manslaughter trial of Matthew Potter, William McCallum, the twin brother of victim Christopher McCallum, remembered his brother.

“We were twins, we had a great relationship,” William McCallum said. “I had a built-in best friend; we were very close.”

Matthew Potter is facing manslaughter and other charges associated with the fatal brawl that ended with the death of Christopher McCallum. On January 26, 2019, the McCallum brothers and Potter, along with Potter’s brother Steven, were all at the American Legion Hall to see a Clash tribute band.

During the night, Matthew Potter was ejected from the building after he allegedly inappropriately grabbed a former girlfriend at the bar. The incident led to a brawl in the parking lot.

William McCallum testified that he was walking out of the club with his brother when they were involved in a fight with Matthew Potter. He testified that he last saw Christopher standing in the parking lot, shortly before he hit the ground.

“It was horrible. He was bleeding out of both of his ears. He was not conscious. I knew it was really bad,” McCallum testified.
