LOWELL, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Lowell police officer was involved in a shooting following a reported stolen vehicle stop Friday evening.

The officer, whose name was not released, fired several rounds at a truck on Bellevue Street that backed into the officer's police vehicle, according to the Lowell Police Department.

The department said the officer was fearing for his life.

The driver, 32-year-old Christopher Bischoff of Lowell, was arrested after he tried to evade the officer but was taken into custody a short distance away. He suffered serious but non-life threatening gun shots wounds and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to the department.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:27 p.m.

The officer was treated at local hospital as well and released later Friday evening. The police vehicle reportedly had extensive damage and was rendered disabled by the Bischoff's actions.

Lowell Police, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office are continuing to investigate the matter.
