Here's a look at Boston City Hall Plaza's $70M overhaul

BOSTON — Boston's City Hall Plaza is getting a major renovation.

The 7-acre public space, used for a variety of city events and celebrations, will be redesigned with the sensibility of a public park.

A rendering of the park's design shows trees, walking paths, seating areas, and a sprawling fountain.

"Boston's City Hall Plaza is a space visited by thousands of Boston residents each and every day," said Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. "This renovation will turn our seven-acre space into a welcoming, accessible space for all, featuring new civic spaces for events to areas for families to enjoy together."

The first phase of the project is expected to cost around $70 million, which has already been allocated in the city's budget. A release from the city did not include the total cost for the completion of the project.

A renovation of the massive, concrete and brick plaza has been a goal of the Walsh administration for the past few years. The city estimates more than 600 residents visit city hall on a daily basis, while 19,500 residents live within a half-mile of the Plaza and about 18 million tourists visit the plaza annually.

A public community meeting will be held at Boston City Hall Plaza on Wednesday, June 5 at 6:00 p.m. for a design presentation and discussion about the Plaza renovation.
