MONSON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Severe weather battered Monson Friday evening.
Police had access to the affected areas blocked off Friday night and wouldn't let our crew pass through to see the damage. The National Weather Service confirmed Friday night that the damage was due to straight line winds that blew down Silver Street. However, some residents feared it may have been a microburst.
The winds caused several downed wires in the area and utility and cable crews worked to get power restored to the few houses along the road. There were also reports of downed trees that blocked access to the road, essentially trapping some people in their cars.
Despite the damage, no injuries were reported in the small town of less than 10,000.
The town of Monson has seen serious storm damage before. In June of 2011, a tornado ripped through the town, causing severe damage to commercial and residential buildings. According to the National Weather Service, the roof of the Monson High School was completely destroyed. Chief Meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz spoke with tornado victims in Monson about their recovery.
