Popular South Shore sports complex and amusement park gets OK to reopen in Phase 2

HANOVER, Mass. — They are racing and playing once again at Starland Sportsplex and Fun Park in Hanover after being closed for the past three months due to the coronavirus.

“[We’re] Pretty nervous and excited at the same time, so it’ll be interesting," Frank Texeira said. “I think we’ve done all we can do to make people feel comfortable about coming here.”

Teixeira is the owner of the sports complex and amusement park.

It’s been on Route 53 since the 1960s. One thing new this year, though, are sanitizing stations. They will be at entrances and exits of each attraction. Teixeira got the O.K. to open for business under Phase Two of the state’s reopening plan, but with major restrictions, particularly when it comes to cleaning.

“For example if you use mini golf clubs they are being sanitized after every use. If you’re in the go cart, they’re also being sanitized after every use,” Teixeira said.

Their outdoor park is now limited to 100 people at a time. Indoors, their basketball courts are open, but with limited capacity for no more than 10 players to a court and no games. Players can only participate in individual drills.

Teixeira said they get almost 2 million total guests every year, but it’ll be different this year with a 6-foot physical distancing requirement both inside and outside.

“We’ve also put into place a traffic flow chart so you can come in one-way and you have to exit the other way. Same for the indoor building. Our front door is currently locked. You have to come in one-way and you’ll be exiting through another exiting portal,” Teixeira said.

Teixeira said all staff is required to wear masks and guests are encouraged to do so. Per state guidelines basketball games and tournaments are not allowed until Phase Three.
