WORCESTER, Mass. — After eight months of vaccines being given out in Massachusetts, anxiety still surrounds it on the streets of Worcester in mid-August, including the idea of booster shots.
“I just think that people are so nervous about the whole thing. I don’t know if anyone trusts what’s going on fully anyways – knowing what they should do or not – so I feel like getting the booster shot is going to get people nervous,” said Kayla Harty of Worcester.
Others see booster shots for COVID-19 as a solution.
“If we are to get some booster shots it would be good for us because I think that would be a long-term remedy; so yeah, we are hopeful about it,” said Shreya Roychowdhury.
For those worried about protection against COVID-19 possibly wearing off, Boston 25 News brought the concerns straight to UMass Memorial doctors.

“It’s not it’s something that goes from 100% to 0%, that’s what we have to remember is you are still projected,” said Dr. Kimi Kobayashi, the chief quality officer at UMass Memorial.
As health officials wait for more guidance on booster shots for COVID-19 from the CDC, action is being taken to better protect everyone from COVID-19 in central Massachusetts. The COVID-19 command center just reopened.
“It allows us to be quick and nimble in our approach to affecting change,” said Justin Precourt, the incident commander for COVID response at UMass Memorial.
The command center includes hundreds of staff communication and monitoring COVID-19 cases, vaccinations, PPE, staffing and beyond. A necessary step, but disheartening it had to open again.
“We are really hopeful, to be honest with you. I think, symbolically, it took us a long time to get us to the point where we were going to reopen it, it feels like a setback, but we also learned with both waves previously that this was the best approach for us,” Precourt said.
