FITCHBURG, Mass. — The American Legion Post 429, Fitchburg's last veteran's club, may soon have to close its doors.
Shortly after World War II, the American Legion chartered a post in Fitchburg, which has been around ever since. However, as they lose older members to death and can't seem to attract younger members, the post has since been faced with some financial struggles.
The Veteran's Organization says there are 80,000 combat veterans in Massachusetts, but just 22,000 belong to the VFW. Both the American Legion and the VFW are facing the same issue.
"I find it sad, very sad," said John Skidmore, a member of Post 429. "I feel bad for the people that come here."
For over 60 years, the post has served as place for veterans in the city to gather, but now there may not be enough members to keep it running.
"Back in the day you couldn't even get a seat in here," said Justin Walker, a member of Post 429. "A good percentage of our loyal every day members are dying."
Justin Walker is too young to remember the golden days of the legion hall, but has been exhausting all his options to help out Post 429.
"All through the week most of the time we're in the red," said Walker. "It's that bad."
The post is now counting on a comedy fundraiser to help ease their financial problems. The "Save the Legion" event will happen this weekend, and anyone is welcome to attend.
"I think we're gonna need a miracle for this place to stay open," said Walker.
