Filmmakers want to recreate Boston Marathon shootout in Watertown

WATERTOWN, Mass. — Producers of a Mark Wahlberg movie about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing want to recreate the police shootout with the Tsarnaev brothers in the Watertown neighborhood where it happened.

Representatives for "Patriots Day" sent fliers to residents of Laurel Street this month asking for their cooperation in obtaining permission to film on their street.

The flier says the project will include a week of preparation in late April and a week of nighttime filming in early May that could include loud noises like simulated gunfire. It also includes three days of cleanup.

"I think that that's good. Especially, the more it’s based on the true facts, the better,” Watertown resident Paul Maslow said.

The story was first reported by watertownmanews.com.

The confrontation on April 19, 2013, resulted in the death of Tamerlan Tsarnaev and injuries to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was later found hiding in a boat.

"It's part of our history, and I think as long as the producers and the folks involved with the movie are respectful of the victims and the families--their thoughts, their wishes, I think its fine,” Former Boston Police Superintendent in Chief Dan Linskey said.

Watertown City Councilor Angeline Kounelis sent an email to producers and others involved in the movie.

"I can only say in the past, residents have specifically stated to me 'we want our neighborhood back.’  As we know the area is quite congested, and, the logistics for almost two plus weeks of neighborhood interruption will be challenging,” she said.

According to the flyer sent to residents filming in the area would take place in early May, with preparation beginning at the end of April.
