BOSTON — Thousands of people crowded into Copley Square to countdown to 2020 Tuesday night.

Boston’s annual First Night celebration offered live music, food vendors, ice sculptures and some very fancy New Year’s Eve attire.

But there was a moment of silence at 6 p.m. for a worker who died during the setup for celebration.

Brandon McSweeney was killed when a 3,500-pound ballast dislodged from a forklift and landed on his chest.

The death is under investigation by police, the Suffolk district attorney’s office, and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

A parade followed at 6:30 p.m. down Boylston Street with wild costumes, loud instruments and a whole lot of excitement.

Many also loved the mild temperatures this year.

Boston Police Commissioner William Gross encouraged everyone to make safe decisions throughout the evening.

“This city began the whole country, so let’s act like that tonight and show people how to party responsibly,” he said.
