BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 2-alarm fire in Dorchester became the city's second fatal fire of the year on Tuesday, after a woman died in the fire. Two firefighters also suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Neighbors began calling 911 at around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after seeing smoke coming out of a two-family home on Tonawanda Street.
Investigators say a woman in her 60s was sitting in the first floor of the apartment when the fire broke out. Witnesses on scene say firefighters performed CPR, but it was too late. She was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital.
One of the injured firefighters suffered a cut to his neck and the other had a leg injury.
The fire appears to have started on the first floor in an area where the woman sits and spends her afternoons, Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn said.
Investigators have determined the cause was an electrical short circuit on the first floor. Damage from the fire is estimated to be at least $300,000. The fire displaced five residents.
