AVON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A car was crushed and people were killed after a brutal crash in Avon. We reported that all started when that car allegedly led police on a pursuit. And on Tuesday night, the victim's families want answers from officers.
Father of one of the victim's, Jose Andrade, said he and his family are coping with the pain and loss. The Cape Verdean family lost 21-year-old Matthew Andrade in the crash.
"He's also into music and that's where I think he was going to learn or do in the future," Jose said.
Matthew's sister Melanie said he told her he loved her on National Sibling Day and she was happy she got the chance to say it back.
Matthew and 21-year-old Denise Moreira, both of Brockton, were killed early Monday morning as the car they were in attempted to flee from police. The chase started after police say the driver of the Nissan Sentra, the pair, and several others were in, honked its horn in the middle of the night.
Police tried to stop the car, but it took off and took police on a chase from Brockton to Avon where they say they lost sight of the car and it crashed into a pole. The impact was so great, it sent the car's engine into the middle of West Main Street and all five people in the car were ejected.
Matthew was trapped under the car and died at the scene. On Tuesday night, his family is still looking for answers.
There was also a question Tuesday over just how quickly rescue crews were able to get to the scene, but Avon Police Chief David Martineau says it was just a jurisdictional issue that was quickly solved.
"I believe the misconception of the delay in the time was Brockton police had a hard time asking Brockton fire to respond to the community of Avon whereas it has to be initiated from the Avon Fire Department to request the services of Brockton Fire Department to respond to the Avon scene," he said.
The district attorney is still investigating whether the chase was warranted. State police assigned to their office are now in the process of accident reconstruction to determine whether charges could be pending against the driver. It's unclear if the officer is off the job.
Matthew will be laid to rest this weekend, the three others involved in the crash remain in the hospital.
