Family hospitalized following head-on crash that killed young mother

GILFORD, N.H. — A serious head-on crash caused by an impaired driver in Gilford, New Hampshire killed a young mother and injured her family members on Tuesday.

Tiana Lozzi, 20, of Lynn, who's the mother of a 1-year-old boy, was on vacation at Lake Winnipesaukee with her family members before she was killed in the crash.

Lozzi's uncle says this is like a nightmare he just wants to wake up from.

"She was always bubbly, I've known her since she was 10, 11," said Ed Nardone, Lozzi's neighbor. "Very, very nice girl, always with her little son. Just unreal, this is devastating."

Police have charged Richard Conroy, who was driving the pick-up truck that collided with Lozzi's car, with driving under the influence and negligent homicide.

"Just a big boom, no tires, no screeching," said Denise Beland, a witness. "Don't drink and drive, lock him up [and] don't let him out."

Lozzi was in the passenger seat while her 20-year-old boyfriend drove the car. A 45-year-old woman, a 3-year-old relative and Lozzi's 1-year-old son were in the back seat at the time of the accident.

"There were lots of children, we got here and the children were screaming and crying, it was bedlam," said Beland.

Nardone says Lozzi and her boyfriend had just saved up enough money to get their own place, and he was ready to help them out.

"My grandsons and daughters are all grown up, anything we had I gave to her [so] she could use," said Nardone.

The family members inside the car remain hospitalized while relatives are by their bedside.

Authorities said the hardest part for the relatives who were driving behind the car was to watch as the crash happened right in front of them.
