Family concerned after several cars crash into their yard

EAST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — A East Bridgewater family says they're living in fear after more than seven crashes ended up in their yard.

The latest of those close calls happened just a few days ago.

Shannon and Derek Richardson are concerned with the safety of the entire family and wonder if these crashes will continue to happen.

The crashes have damaged or destroyed the cars on the Bridge Street home, and in one case, caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage to the house itself.

“The kids aren’t allowed to be out front to wait for the bus they have to wait on the stairs, I don’t let them ride their bikes or anything in the front yard at all I’m just too afraid," said Shannon Richardson.

Last Tuesday, an alleged drunk driver went across the neighbor's lawn and crashed into their brand new truck and a rental car they had been using. The family had actually purchased the truck earlier that day - it had just four miles on it.

"We were right here in the driveway - my kids would have been killed if it was an hour or an hour and a half earlier than when it happened," said Shannon Richardson.

The family doesn't quite know how to fix the problem as the house isn't located on a curve or an intersection.

In the summer of 2016, a driver fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into the Richardson's home, cracking the walls of their daughter's bedroom.

“We have lived here as a family for 45 years so the first year when the house was completed a car came through our front yard and almost killed my brother, my middle brother almost got hit – this is the seventh time something has happened here," said Richardson.

They're hoping, however, that their experience will encourage drivers in general to be more careful.

While the family is asking drivers to be more careful, they're considering putting out boulders or some sort of fencing in front of the house, but they're waiting on their insurance so they can pay to fix the yard and the driveway first.

"Imagine living somewhere for almost 50 years, you don't want to leave," said Richardson.
