Falmouth near-drowning: Child transported to hospital in critical condition

A 7-year-old child is in critical condition after nearly drowning in Falmouth, according to the Falmouth Fire Department.

The incident happened at the Sea Crest Resort Pool on Quaker Road.

Bystanders noticed the boy at the bottom of the deep end of the pool and pulled him to the deck, where someone then performed CPR.

"We just know it to be bystanders," Falmouth Fire Captain Robert Bergeron Jr. said. "The scene was cluttered with numerous people, there was the thought that there may have been some doctors on scene, but we were not able to confirm that."

By the time first responders arrived, the child had a pulse and was breathing, but was still unconscious.

Paramedics worked to resuscitate him as they brought him to Falmouth Hospital by ambulance, and then to Massachusetts General Hospital by MedFlight.

Bergeron was one of the first responders on scene, thinking of his own child as he saw the boy was still not alert after CPR.

"He did have a pulse," Bergeron said. "He was breathing, but he was not alert."

Police don't know if it was a medical incident that sent the child underwater, or if he was left unattended.

Bergeron said the incident is a timely reminder to keep track of your children, with temperatures rising and tourists heading to beaches and pools for the holiday weekend.

"Certainly the water as we’ve seen in the past can be a dangerous area," Bergeron said. "We just advise that you keep an eye on your children. Unfortunately, things like this do happen”
