BEVERLY, Mass. — As colleges and universities across the country work to improve school security many are deciding to arm police officers on campus.
On Thursday Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. that they will begin arming trained officers on campus.
“Under strict policy, the guns will not be removed from the holster except to protect the lives of members of our community,” Endicott President Richard E. Wylie said in a letter to students.
The new rule will go into effect in July, and Wylie said only one or two officers per shift will be carrying firearms to begin with.
School leaders say the armed officers will have completed the Massachusetts Reserve Police Academy. They will also have annual training as required from the Massachusetts State Police.
