Newburyport Fire Chief Christopher LeClaire said it took well over an hour for crews to get the quick-moving fire under control. LeClaire said he had feared the block could have burned down.
Emergency crews responded to 155 High St. around 2:30 p.m. for a report of a fire. A construction worker who was in the upper level of the two-floor building made the emergency call.

The fire spread from the building, which was built in the 1700s, to two other buildings.
Several other communities including Rowley, Amesbury and Portsmouth, N.H. provided mutual aid.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although officials said Monday that the fire is not being considered suspicious at this time.
