'Electrical short circuit' caused Charlestown fire, investigators say

BOSTON — A short circuit in electric wiring caused a laundromat, made somewhat famous in a Ben Affleck film, to go up in flames Friday, according to the Boston Fire Department.

The Monument Laundromat in the city's Charlestown neighborhood burned Friday in a blaze reported shortly before 7 a.m.

Investigators said Sunday the fire was caused by a an “electrical short circuit” in the Laundromat’s ceiling.

The 6-alarm fire was knocked down in a matter of hours, though the cold made fighting the fire difficult.

The Boston Fire Department said temperatures in the single digits made for tough work for firefighters and caused some hydrants to freeze. Thick ice built up on firefighters' jackets, ladders and trucks.

Officials said several people were displaced from apartments in the two upper floors of the three-story building.

Affleck directed, co-wrote and starred in the 2010 movie "The Town." He introduces himself to his love interest in a scene set in the laundromat, which sits a few blocks from the Bunker Hill monument.
