MEDFIELD, Mass. — If you thought you heard an explosion this afternoon in the Medfield area this afternoon, you’re not alone.

According to police and fire departments in the area, a number of concerned residents called in today just after 2 p.m., asking what had happened.

But it wasn’t only in Medfield that the loud “boom” shook people - those in Franklin, Norfolk, Foxborough and Bellingham all said they heard one loud explosion.

“I was at the counter and all of the sudden I heard this loud noise and the building shook," said Matthew Triest, a Medfield resident who had been working at a store on North Street. "It almost sounded like a car had hit the building or something and we looked out back and out front, but we didn’t see anything.”

Residents who took to social media to find answers were only met with other concerned neighbors and no answers; many saying it sounded like a large tree had fallen to the ground.

“It sounded like something very large fell, like a tree. The house shook a little." Melissa Roeder said in a Facebook post.

A caller in Franklin told police she had been out walking when she heard the noise that “almost sounded like a tree falling”.

Ultimately, the answers came from Bellingham, where the fire department confirmed the noise came from Mechanic Street, where crews were blowing up a rock ledge to clear space for a new warehouse that’s scheduled for construction.

Despite the concerning explosion sound, the Bellingham Fire Department assured everyone that there’s no danger to the public. However, the loud noises are far from over.

The department says the blast will stop over the weekend, but is scheduled to resume again next week. They also plan to put out a statement soon to alert more people to what is happening and reassure them.
