Deadly fire under investigation in Taunton

TAUNTON, Mass. — One person was killed when a large fire spread through a multi-family home in Taunton late Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 246 Washington St. around 11 p.m.

Taunton fire Captain Tim Bradshaw said when crews arrived, they were met with heavy smoke and flames coming from the third floor.

He said his crews kicked in the door and started to evacuate people inside. Six adults and two children were able to safely escape.

“With the conditions always make it difficult,” Bradshaw said. “You know, some trouble with water pressure in one of the hydrants, but we just lay the line in the other direction and that solved the problem.”

The displaced residents are being helped by the Red Cross and Emergency Management.

The home was declared a total loss.

Investigators haven’t determined a cause of the fire.
