Clay Buchholz leaves game with elbow tightness as Yankees beat Red Sox

Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz left Friday night's game against New York in the fourth inning with elbow tightness and the Yankees beat the Red Sox 5-1 Friday night to take the first game of the three-game series.

Buchholz was replaced with one out in the fourth inning by Robbie Ross, Jr. after manager John Farrell was called to the mound along with the Red Sox training staff.

After a short conversation, Farrell quickly decided to remove Buchholz from the game.

Farrell said the injury will be evaluated further and Buchholz has not had elbow issues previously.

"Any time a player comes off the field you've got concern for them and their health is a priority," said Farrell. "We'll take every measure to get information for it."

Alex Rodriguez opened the scoring Friday night with his 17th home run of the season, a solo shot to left in the first inning.

Three additional runs scored thanks to defensive miscues in the fourth inning after Buchholz was relieved by Ross.

Mookie Betts homered for the Red Sox, providing the only offense of the night for the home team.
