PROVIDENCE, R.I. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus were cited for a safety violation after eight performers and on employee were injured during a "Hair Hang Act" gone awry.
Eight performers had been hanging on steel rings during a May 4 performance when they the contraptions suddenly dislodged and the performers fell more than 15 feet to the ground, sustaining serious injuries. A ninth employee who had been working on the ground was struck by the falling performers.
An investigation into the incident determined the accident to have been caused by an improperly loaded carabiner.
The circus was charged with one serous safety violation with a proposed penalty of $7,000.
