Chelmsford schools extend rest of school days by 35 minutes

CHELMSFORD, Mass. — Chelmsford Public Schools will extend their school days by 35 minutes for the rest of the year to finish a week early.

Starting Monday, April 23 until Friday, June 22, Chelmsford schools will close 35 minutes later to make up for any canceled days due to snow or power outages. The original idea was proposed last week, and was approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on Wednesday.

Assistant Superintendent Linda Hirsch sent a message to Chelmsford parents and staff saying the school district received approval to add 35 minutes to each school day to meet the 180-day requirement from the state.

"This extension would provide schools with the much-needed learning time now while students are deep in the learning process and provide continuity of learning with continuous days in school," Hirsch said.
