WESTWOOD, Mass. — A man who crashed a car into a Westwood pond has been charged with drinking and driving.

Rescuers scrambled to Buckmaster Pond Monday night after the car plunged into the water with the driver trapped inside, according to fire officials.

A nearby telephone pole was snapped in half, apparently having been run through by the truck.

"We heard a big thump like a car crash," Sam Sinno, who lives nearby, told FOX25. "All of a sudden, we see the pole broke and the fence is broken and the guy is in the water."

According to the Westwood Fire Department, the driver apparently lost control and hit the telephone pole before crashing into a barrier and sliding into the pond.

The driver, a 40-year-old man, was the only person in the truck and was able to get out on his own, fire officials said. He was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Firefighters had to saw through two to three inches of ice to get the truck in order to pull it out.

"I mean, you couldn't even see the car, it was completely submerged," one neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, said.

The driver managed to get out and make it to shore, but the truck had to be towed out after a pathway was cut through the ice.

Following an investigation, the man was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation, and speeding.
