NEWTON, Mass. — Two people were killed after a car crashed into a Sweet Tomatoes restaurant in Newton, according to police.
Witnesses told FOX25 that the car had been coming down the hill at Chestnut Street, ran a red light, and went across the intersection at Washington Street. The car struck two other vehicles then crashed into the restaurant's front wall.
In addition to the two deaths, seven people, including the driver, were taken to the hospital.
According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, the driver of the vehicle was not killed in the crash. It is still unclear what caused the crash.
Residents of Newton said there are many teens and high school students who work at the restaurant.
"What we know right now we know employees are accounted for so these would have been patrons,” Ryan said.
Newton Mayor Setti Warren offered his condolences to the victims of the crash.
"The first thing I want to do is send my thoughts and prayers out to the family of the victims.. in this awful tragedy,” he said.
