CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Cambridge police are investigating a string of brazen burglaries in one neighborhood of the city.
All of the break-ins took place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons while many residents were at work.
The thief or thieves have broken into nine homes since April 18, on eight nearby streets in the Wellington-Harrington neighborhood, snatching jewelry, laptops, purses, gaming systems and cash.
“I’m totally shocked. It’s time to keep my eyes open,” said Anthony Moreira, who has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years. ”This is usually a quiet neighborhood, and it has been for so long.”
The criminals are looking for easy targets, homes with unlocked doors, but they have also picked a couple locks and forced their way in.
“I think it’s people’s first responsibility is to make sure that their doors are locked,” said Daniel Costanzo, who lives on Marcella Street, where one of the break-ins occurred.
Police urge residents to lock their doors - particularly those on street-level and accessible by fire escape - and to install guards on windows that prevent them from being fully opened.
Cambridge police are also reminding residents of apartment buildings not to prop open lobby doors or let strangers in behind them.
