CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Cambridge City Council voted Monday night to ban the sale of pets in the city limits.
The ban includes mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians from pet stores, including PetCo and PetSmart.
The vote was 8-1 from council members, making the city the latest of about 250 municipalities across the U.S. restricting pet sales.
Boston passed a similar ordinance in 2016.
Neither the Boston nor Cambridge ordinance prevents responsible breeders from direct sales to consumers, nor do they prohibit pet ship from partnering with shelters or rescues.
The ordinance goes into effect in 12 months.
