Bullet pierces home in Berkley, hitting two interior walls

BERKLEY, Ma. (MyFoxBoston.com) - A Berkley family said their quiet cul-de-sac felt like a war zone last week after a bullet pierced their home landing within 10 feet of a child who was doing her homework.

Paul Costa said the single bullet not only shattered his plaster, it shattered his sense of security. He called police Wednesday after the bullet made it into his exterior wall and through two interior walls.

"I heard a huge boom and I saw the wall start to crumble," Sophia Costa told FOX 25.

Paul said the shots were still being fired from nearby woods when police arrived. He said officers ordered his children and their grandmother to "run" out of the house as officers ran through his yard with their guns drawn looking for the source of the shooting.

Paul said police told him the person who pulled the trigger was doing some target shooting at the Leland Horse Farm, which is about 1,500 feet away from his home. He said police told him the man did not break a law because he was firing from more than 500 feet away. They said he would only be responsible for fixing the damage to the home.

Paul said the man who shot the bullet has apologized and offered to pay for the damage. He reached out to FOX 25 because he questions a law that makes it legal for this kind of thing to happen.

"I don't know anything about guns, but to have a single bullet traverse forest, cross a rail line, and land within ten feet of person sitting in their home is definitely a story worth sharing," he said.

Police told FOX 25 they had no comment on the story.
